CANADA
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

Reported on September 15:
Liam Fisher, 34 - Tragic end to search in Grenada for B.C. medical student
September 15, 2023
An extensive search for a B.C. man who was studying medicine in Grenada came to a tragic end this week. Liam Fisher’s body was found days after he went missing while on an organized run last weekend. His parents, who live in Pemberton, say foul play is not suspected but the cause of death is not yet known. “He’s an endurance athlete and trained very hard so I don’t know what’s happened,” said Liam’s grieving father, Hugh Fisher, who is a physician. It’s hoped an autopsy may provide more information. “It sounds to me like possibly some kind of medical emergency happened during the race,” Fisher said. Liam Fisher, who was 34 and previously owned a gym in North Vancouver, was a medical student at St. George’s University in Grenada. But last Saturday, while doing a short, organized running race, Liam vanished. “He was in with the elite pack most of the way and then faded toward the end, and never turned up at the finish line,” said Hugh Fisher. Liam’s disappearance was not reported until Monday when he failed to show up for classes. His parents received the devastating news of their son’s death Tuesday night after his body was found in a treed area.

Samuel Smith
September 15, 2023
Lucan - Samuel died suddenly on September 13, 2023. He entered this world as a beautiful, spirited, wide-eyed baby. Unfortunately, Samuel began to struggle with addiction and mental illness at a very young age and though we don’t want this to define him, it has been a reality of his journey that we cannot ignore. Despite multiple attempts at sobriety, including a 22-month period of sobriety supported by the community he found at the Pine River Institute, he continued to fight addiction. His battle with addiction and mental illness pushed many people away from him, especially over the last two years and he found himself struggling deeply with loneliness. He faced many difficulties. Every day was a struggle. Recently Samuel made a commitment to rebuild his relationship with his family. He soaked up stories from his Grandad and expressed after a recent visit how much “I love to hear Grandad laugh”. He learned to sew pajamas with his Grandma and they developed such a special relationship he called her his “best friend”. This past year he enjoyed visits, many laughs, and competitive games of crokinole with his Grammy, Nappy, Uncle and cousin. Samuel worked hard to connect and repair and we know he just wanted to feel love. We enjoyed a family dinner together on Sunday and had been in touch every day until he died. Despite it all, addiction won the battle but it did not win over our love for each other.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Kevin Robert Devine at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital in Toronto, Ontario. Kevin was born and raised in Toronto, and served as a longtime employee of BMO Nesbitt Burns Inc. as an investment adviser with the Charlton Group. He had a great love of sports throughout his life, competing in hockey for York Mills and North Toronto, and battling on the tennis courts at the Toronto Cricket & Skating Club and for his high school Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute. So extraordinary was his nature and magnetic personality that he formed a great many close and lasting friendships. Kevin was always there with sage advice, a perfectly timed joke and a helping hand whenever needed. Throughout Kevin’s resilient and courageous battle with cancer, he never lost his sense of humor and remained attentive to his friends and family. Though his life ended far too soon, those that were lucky enough to know Kevin were the better for it.

His laughter, his shining smile brought so much happiness to all those who knew him. Lukas was a devoted son, brother, cousin, nephew, grandson and friend to many, who love him so much. Lukas was a gentle and kind, funny and sweet soul. He had a brilliant and complex mind. He loved reading medical journals and court transcripts and enjoyed a good debate. John’s battle was a difficult one, but it is comforting to know that he is at peace and is reunited with his lifelong best friend and wife. Our family will miss his uncanny craftsmanship, quick wit, and ability to look at any situation in a positive light. Dad had an overwhelming pride in his family and the ability both him and Mom exercised to do whatever they could to help their family.
