Bloomington girl who died from strep honored for her spirit, character
June 4, 2023
Bloomington, IL — On a quiet and sunny Sunday afternoon, more than 100 Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Scout leaders jammed into Bloomington's Second Presbyterian Church for a special award ceremony. On May 21, Rose Tylor Kunkes, 7, of Cub Scout Pack 3905, was awarded the Spirit of the Eagle. But Rose [above, right] wasn't there. The Spirit of the Eagle is presented to the families of Scouts who have died early in life. Rose's family — her father Nick, mother Teresa, 14-year-old brother Jonathan and 7-year-old twin sister River — received the award in her stead. Rose's parents recounted how she had gotten sick in January with a common childhood illness, strep throat. "Just normal kid stuff," her father said. Teresa Kunkes said they took her to the doctor, got antibiotics, and things went back to normal. Then, on Feb. 19, Rose started feeling sick again. Rose's father said she presented the same symptoms of strep throat: "She was kind of lethargic, just kind of laying around." The following Monday, the Kunkeses took Rose back to the doctor, where she got another strep diagnosis and stronger antibiotics. They assumed everything would be fine. But she had a rough night, and by the following morning, Rose was dehydrated and needed to go to the emergency room. Nick Kunkes said, as soon as the doctors started treating his daughter at OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, "They immediately knew, they immediately said she had toxic shock syndrome from the strep, and that her body was shutting down."

Owen Bartlett Fudge, 16
June 9, 2023
Baton Rouge, LA — Owen Bartlett Fudge was born on April 23, 2007 and left this world on June 6, 2023. Of the ways we evaluate life, the number of years is hardly the most significant. Owen was only with us for sixteen years, but during this time, he displayed the most genuine love with goodness and grace, not only to his family and friends, but also strangers and competitors. His time was filled with more life and love than anyone could hope to have in 100 years. Owen exemplified a servant's heart in all aspects of life, always being the first to offer a helping hand and the last to complain. He carried himself with wisdom and integrity well beyond his years. Owen was an incredible student, exceptional athlete, and a competitor in every aspect of his life. In everything he did, he was committed to investing the time and energy required to learn how to be the best and was always a leader, on and off the field. Owen loved his family and friends deeply and without reservation, and the void his loss has left will never be filled. His spirit will live on in his brothers, his family, his teammates, and in the life of every person he touched along the way.

Michaela Oeffner [Facebook]
June 7, 2023
It is with great sadness that I share this with family and friends today. We are grieving the loss of our beautiful daughter, Michaela. She died unexpectedly on Sunday June 4th after a short stay in the ICU. She was brought to the hospital by ambulance unconscious and unresponsive. It was determined that she had a brain aneurism which lead to a major hemorrhage that she did not recover from. She was surrounded by both her biological family and her adoptive family and friends at the time of her passing. Michaela was registered as an organ donor and in this capacity donated both of her kidneys that went to 2 different people to save their lives. Michaela was loved by so many people at all of the stages of her life. We want to thank those who loved her deeply, prayed for her, supported and encouraged her. She had a difficult beginning to her life and an undeserved early loss of innocence that would make it almost impossible for her to slow down enough to feel the love, protection and stability that she needed and deserved without a doubt. There will be a private service this Saturday.
