On 1 June 2016 he was appointed by the President of the Republic, upon nomination by the Presidents of the Chamber and Senate, as a member of the Commission for guaranteeing the implementation of the law on strikes in essential public services, where he held the role of President.

"While a team was heading to the area by land, an AW139 helicopter of the Police Flight Department embarked three helicopter rescue technicians from the Alpine Rescue in Boccadifalco and in a few minutes,” reads a note, “reached the mountain where it landed them. But unfortunately the man had already died, probably due to a heart attack". The attempts to revive the man by two other doctors who were part of the group of hikers were also in vain. This is the third such death.
