Ginger A. Dailey, 45
May 4, 2022
Ginger Dailey, 45, born in Riverside CA, on June 13, 1976, died on May 2, 2022, from a sudden, tragic brain aneurism. Born to her were two amazing humans, Tiffany Lineberry of Wyoming, and Nicole Bauer of Saratoga, Wyoming. She became mother to Jolie Lusch of Michigan, when God sent her into the life of her fiancée, John Lusch. She was the grandmother of Amberly Lineberry of Wyoming, an infant who will sadly never know the endless love that Ginger blessed her people with, as they only had time for one visit.
Ginger loved nothing more than family, and it extended far past those related to her. So many called her mama Ginger, and her happiness was nurturing those she loved. She enjoyed feasting and festivities, camping, exploring vast expanses of public land, in hopes of finding a beautiful stone, gem, or artifact. She was one with nature, spoke often to animals and plants, and they loved her in return. She was eager to help, excited to go along for the ride, and satisfied with whatever she had around her at any time. She loved her man fiercely, and when she was torn from this world, a part of him was ripped away also. The people who felt this number many, as the world was a better place when she was in it.

Sally Kaye: A Hui Hou To Fern Duvall, Hawaii's 'Biological Yoda'
Fern Duvall played an important but little known role in helping activists successfully derail the massive wind turbine project known as Big Wind.
May 9, 2022
My phone rang about 1 p.m. on a Tuesday afternoon and it was Fern Duvall.
“Sally, have you read Appendix G? Did you see the Cooper study? Have you checked out the radar survey results on page 37?”
I knew Fern, of course, he’d been to my house several times with Jay Penniman and Scott Fretz to talk about protecting a newly rediscovered colony of ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel) on Lanai.
In fact, I still have a two-page “Overview of Regulatory Issues Under the State ESA, Chapter 195D, with Reference to Threatened and Endangered Birds on Lanai” they prepared for us. It became my bible in following the byzantine process required by statute. I framed it.
Penniman, Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project Manager, told me he and Fern began surveys in early March 2006, hoping to find amakihi on Lanai — they didn’t — but immediately found ʻuaʻu “everywhere we looked on Lanaihale. As far as we can tell now, the Lanai population is the second largest in existence after the Haleakala population. Our research also documented that the two populations are genetically distinct.”
These and other endangered species were thought to be at risk by the seven meteorological towers Castle & Cooke wanted to put up on the North End as a first step to erecting hundreds of massive wind turbines on Lanai to send energy to Oahu — part of the project known as Big Wind.
No, I hadn’t gotten to page 37 of the Cooper study, buried as it was in a back appendix. But I’d met with Fern enough to know he was the most understated, humble, gentle speaker on the planet, and the unusual excitement in his voice was hard to miss.
“Well, then go read it and then call me back!”
I did, and it was a game-changer. One that without Fern, we probably would have missed.
I didn’t understand the science (still not sure I do) but Fern pointed me to what was probably the most significant piece of data buried at the end of a lengthy study conducted as part of a habitat conservation plan required to obtain an incidental take license and permit, estimating the fatality rate of ʻuaʻu (and other protected and endangered avian life) that could occur with Castle & Cooke’s proposed gigantic spinning blades. Suffice it to say the study’s estimated numbers far surpassed the proposed take limits of the HCP.
The MET towers are a thing of the past and the massive turbines never materialized — but now, sadly, Fern is gone as well.
Fern died suddenly on Feb. 23, two months after retiring from close to 40 years in conservation work in the islands.
Cause of death, and age, not reported.

Roger Chriss, 56: Remembering a True Helper and Advocate
May 8, 2022
“Roger was a good friend and caring person. He will be missed tremendously.”
“May this dear, wonderful, kind man rest in the peace he deserves. Free of pain.”
“Heaven just got a great mathematician. Heaven's gain. Our loss.”
Those are just a few of the heartfelt tributes being posted online about PNN columnist Roger Chriss, who was a longtime advocate and friend to people living with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and other rare diseases.
Roger died unexpectedly on May 2 at a hospital near his home in Kirkland, Washington. He was 56 years old. Although Roger lived with EDS – a chronic and progressive disease that affects the joints, blood vessels and other connective tissues -- it’s unclear if that contributed to his death. His brother Neil says Roger experienced chest pains and drove himself to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a mild heart attack.
“He was given blood thinners as part of standard care. He was due to be released and suddenly collapsed and was found with no pulse and no blood pressure,” said Neil Chriss. “In trying to figure out what had caused the collapse they found he had lost a lot of blood internally, so they suspected this had to do with the combination of blood thinners and E-D related weakness in blood vessel walls.”
Roger grew up in Westchester County, New York where he developed an early interest in mathematics, music, computers and foreign languages. He graduated from Wesleyan University in 1987 with a major in East Asia studies. He later earned a Master’s degree at the Monterey Institute of International Studies and remained there as a faculty member.
Roger was fluent in Japanese, Spanish, French, Latin and other languages. He was a prolific writer and authored two books that reflected his diverse interests: "A Comedy of Time" and "Translation as a Profession."
