David Crosby 'Was Not Dying': Singer Working on Summer Tour, New Album Until the Week He Died
January 22, 2023
David Crosby may have suffered from an illness prior to his death, but his collaborators can attest to how hardworking he was because the legendary singer was reportedly planning to go on a major tour this summer and even working on a new album until the week he passed away. Musician Steve Postell spoke to Variety to discuss the final days of the singer, saying the Crosby, Stills & Nash co-founder has been joking about his death for years as he didn't think he was going to last, but the thought never stopped him from envisioning a performance in front of a live audience again after the global pandemic. The legendary vocalist reportedly discussed the logistics of his planned shows like tour buses, venues to perform at, the production staff like a tour manager, sound personnel, and the band that would accompany him. However, he noted it's sad that the public never had the chance to watch the shows he had been planning because it was unique and it's similar to "the original sound of Crosby, Stills & Nash." Postell was not able to stay with Crosby on the day of his death, but they have been constantly communicating with each other, and even met the week prior for an intimate rehearsal around Santa Barbara. At the time, the musician revealed that the legendary singer "hadn't lost the fire" as he was still working on a lot of things at once like singing, writing, playing, and preparing for a comeback show, contrary to what the public thought that he had been lying in bed for two years. Touching on the subject of his death, Postell noted that there was "some misinformation" about the musician after the news of his death broke out because there was a press release that circulated from a publicist, quoting the singer's wife that he had been suffering from a long illness. However, the musician slammed the claims, saying it was a "confusing thing" because he was not dying, but rather he was battling "preexisting conditions" that are known to the public after sharing it in his documentary "David Crosby: Remember My Name." On the other hand, Sarah Jarosz, one of the young artists that Crosby admired and championed during his final years, confirmed that she worked with the musician on what would have been his next album.

Blues musician, educator Thomasina Winslow dies at 57
January 17, 2023
New Baltimore, NY — Lifelong Capital Region resident Thomasina Winslow, who sang on her folk-singer father's album when she was 4, majored in classical guitar at the University at Albany, traveled the world after she became a musician herself, used music to reach at-risk youth and ran for town council after moving back to her hometown, died Jan. 12 at age 57. The cause was a stroke, her brother said. "Music was what she lived and breathed. It was the way she saw the world. She was a vessel for it and a bearer of its traditions," said Sarah Craig, executive director of the folk-music haven Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs. Winslow, scheduled to perform at the venue Feb. 4 with the blues band Nite Train, was connected to Caffe Lena since childhood because her father, Tom Winslow, performed there. "Losing her was a huge blow to the music community," said Chris Shaw, a singer-songwriter and guitar player who last performed with Winslow on a holiday radio show in December on WEXT with another veteran area singer-songwriter and guitarist, Michael Eck.

The recent midterm election coverage was easily one of the finest nights of special coverage he produced throughout his career. Ralph Sacco, Neurologist and AHA Past President, Dies of Brain Cancer
January 17, 2023
Ralph Sacco, the first neurologist to serve as American Heart Association (AHA) president and the long-time editor-in-chief of Stroke, died today of an aggressive brain tumor, the AHA announced today. Sacco was 65. His former mentor and friend, Jay P. Mohr (Columbia University, New York, NY), called him a valiant “resistor” to the cancer that ultimately took his life. “During much of the time that he had the known brain tumor, he continued to perform at a very high level as editor of the journal Stroke and director of the neurology program at the University of Miami,” Mohr told TCTMD. “Probably because the tumor affected the side of the brain that was not dominant for speech and language, he was able to carry out all this activity right up to the end.” At the time of his death, Sacco was professor and Olemberg Chair of Neurology at the University of Miami, executive director at the McKnight Brain Institute, chief of neurology at Jackson Memorial Hospital, and director at the University of Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute.

Reading through this list, the young ages, the numbers - just shatters my heart. It reminds me of being in Nicaragua as a human rights activist opposing the U.S. counter-insurgency war there back in 1990. Each little village had a room in a building called a "gallery of heroes and martyrs." The walls of the room were pasted with the photos of those killed in each village by the U.S. supported Contra terror attacks. I was in tears walking through those galleries, and you'd have to have the heart of a sociopath not to be. Reading through these lists and seeing the faces of the dead brings back those memories, along with that same sense of both the sadness and the madness of it all. So many needless deaths of innocents. Given that the "pandemic response" was run out of the DOD - one can even draw a line of culpability between these two atrocities. I don't remember his name, but I recall that a Nicaraguan bishop in that era made the observation that given all the U.S. military was "learning" while carrying out the horrors of those U.S. counter-insurgency operations across Latin America - that he predicted the U.S. government would one day turn their machine of death and repression against the American people and he predicted that - "someday the American people will be the most oppressed people on earth." Those words echo through time for me.
This is just insane....
