In memory of those who “died suddenly” in Canada, January 16-January 23, 2023
Manitoba firefighter Brent Wery, & lawyer Ronald Edward Dearman; New Brunswick dentist Jean-Marie Caissie; and 209 more across Canada
CANADA
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some large populations.
Specifically, we have had trouble finding data on the “sudden deaths” of Asians, East Indians and Jews throughout the country (three large minorities), and of the Filipinos in Alberta. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in the Territories—especially about the large indigenous community, whom Trudeau’s police have sought to “vaccinate” by force. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for that community, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden.
What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A firefighter “died suddenly” in Manitoba:
Reported on January 12:
Brent Wery, 42
January 12, 2023
Steinbach - It’s with disbelief and great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Brent Wery on Sunday, January 8th, 2023. By day he worked as a Charge Medical Radiology Technologist at HSC, since 2002. By night he was a devoted father, and somewhere in the middle of all that he managed to find time volunteering as Captain Fire Fighter for the Richer Fire Department, was a passionate counselor for his community and the R.M. of Ste. Anne, proudly represented the Eastman Regions Female hockey Council for Hockey Manitoba, and was an enthusiastic and energetic member of the Richer Community club. Just to name a few! He was often the life of the party bringing positivity and dad jokes to any room he walked into.

An avid outdoors person, Charlee was skilled with a rifle and filled many freezers with moose meat. In fact, she was featured in the Newfoundland Sportsmans magazine, not once but twice. But that was just the tip of the iceberg as she also loved salmon fishing, snow shoeing and Nordic skiing. A lover of animals, she had an affinity for dogs – welcoming three into her home: Callie, Tucker, and Lucy. Callie was her first puppy, a Shitzhu who brightened her life while in Nursing school.

Eleanor Marguerite Saulnier, 66
January 9, 2023
Meteghan - If you are reading this, it means I have passed away. After graduating from Clare District High School, I attended the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro where I graduated in 1977. What followed was a rewarding 34 year teaching career in three different schools in Clare. Teaching was my passion and so, when I retired in 2011, I continued to go to school as a volunteer for 9 years and helped out where needed, until the Covid-19 Pandemic prevented me from volunteering. I also took great pleasure working in my flower gardens, reading, watching movies, biking and swimming. Donations in my memory may be made to Jacky Comeau & Friends Cancer Help Fund Association.

Michael Ray "Mike" MacDonald, 63
January 9, 2023
It is with great sadness the family of Michael Ray "Mike" MacDonald announces his passing on Thursday, January 5, 2023. Mike, admitted to Colchester East Hants Health Centre at the time, succumbed to cancer after being diagnosed in March of 2021 and dealing – to no one’s surprise - courageously with the disease. In a sad irony, his beloved wife also lost a battle to the disease only a year and a half earlier; was 58 when she passed away in May of 2021. He took pride in watching his own son follow in his footsteps playing ball and hockey and sharing in the passion. His daughter, was a strength at his side to help him through these trying months since her passing. To say he was a very proud father would be an understatement. Special thanks to oncologist. Donations in Mike’s memory to Jumpstart.

Thank-you once again for this week's posting for Canada. I keep waiting for the majority of people to connect the dots, particularly for the younger people dying suddenly and unexpectedly. It seems most people are completely oblivious and don't even question these deaths.
I just found out that a Canadian acquaintance who I saw last weekend, died suddenly in his sleep. I'll make sure his obit is passed along.
