Its pretty simple and it doesn't require aliens or black nobility etc.
The powers that shouldn't be, have known for a long time that the economy depends on consumers, and when you have, through automation, a tiny minority harvesting more and more of everything, then the vast majority will have nothing besides time on their hands to plot revolution. So these powers, to sleep better in their castles, decided some time ago to just rid the earth of this vast majority. This is how stupid and venal they are, and this mindset is itself created by the fortunes they have, because without those fortunes they would be just ordinary people.
None of this would be news to the framers of the U.S. Constitution, who were at the forefront of a worldwide movement driven by the Enlightenment to sweep away the old European hereditary and religious rulers. But for now those rulers have gained the upper hand, temporarily.
