Paul Simon opens up about his 'sudden' hearing loss: 'Nobody has an explanation for it'
May 21, 2023
It's unlikely that Paul Simon will be returning to live performances anytime soon.
In a new interview with the Sunday Times, the legendary singer-songwriter, 81, opened up about losing part of his hearing while working on his latest album, Seven Psalms, which has put any performing plans on pause.
“Quite suddenly I lost most of the hearing in my left ear, and nobody has an explanation for it. So everything became more difficult," Simon explained. "My reaction to that was frustration and annoyance; not quite anger yet, because I thought it would pass, it would repair itself.”
But his hearing has yet to be restored. According to Simon, it's part of a string of health challenges he's faced in recent years.
“Boy, have I been beaten up in these last couple of years,” he noted, pointing out a tough struggle with COVID-19. “But I look good, right?”

Sam Smith Abruptly Ends Concert, Apologizes to Fans: 'Something Was Really Wrong'
May 25, 2023
Sam Smith apologized to their fans after abruptly stopping their concert in Manchester, U.K. Wednesday night. Smith felt "something wrong" with their voice while performing the third song, but their condition only worsened as they tried to perform the next song. The "Unholy" singer also postponed upcoming shows in Birmingham and Glasgow.
Smith, 31, dealt with a virus during their tour of Europe and hoped their show in the U.K. would go off without a problem. "Today in soundcheck I felt fine and was so excited to give Manchester an amazing show tonight, with a special surprise at the end," Smith wrote. "During my third song, I noticed something was wrong with my voice. I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong."
Smith started the show with "Stay With Me." He then performed "I'm Not The Only One" and "Like I Can." He started "Too Good at Goodbyes" before leaving the stage, reports NME. The lights were temporarily dimmed and fans thought there was a power cut. The audience was told Smith had "vocal issues" and were asked to leave the venue.
On Thursday, Smith confirmed their shows in Birmingham and Glasgow would have to be rescheduled due to his health. Fans will be provided refunds for the Birmingham, Glasgow, and Manchester shows. Smith is next scheduled to perform in Warsaw at the Orange Warsaw Festival on June 2. The Glasgow concert was already a rescheduled show from April that Smith had to miss due to an illness.

Facing ‘crisis,’ band cancels major, sold-out Boise concert for second straight summer
May 26, 2023
For the second straight summer, Rainbow Kitten Surprise will not perform for a sold-out crowd at Outlaw Field in Boise as planned. At least fans got more notice this time.
The alternative-rock band — slated to headline the Idaho Botanical Garden’s 4,000-capacity venue Sept. 19 — has canceled all of its remaining tour dates in 2023.
Last year, the bad Boise news came the day before the show; the band also nixed all of its remaining July and August dates as part of the announcement.
In that instance, singer Ela Melo explained in an online post that the challenges of being on tour had become too much: “As amazing as it has been singing and dancing with you every night, the toll of life on the road has finally reached its breaking point. I have decided it is in my and our best interest to take this time to regroup and focus on my mental health.”
This time? Rainbow Kitten Surprise posted on social media Tuesday that it had “come to the decision to put our health as our only priority right now. One of our members is in a medical crisis. To make sure they have the time to get the proper treatment, we have decided to take down the entire year of shows and turn off the lights for now.”
