A new review of cancer registry records from 44 countries found that the incidence of early-onset cancers is rising rapidly for colorectal and 13 other types of cancers, many of which affect the digestive system, and this increase is happening across many middle- and high-income nations.

The review's authors say the upswing in younger adults in happening in part because of more sensitive testing for some cancer types, such as thyroid cancer. But testing doesn't completely account for the trend, says co-author Shuji Ogino, a professor of pathology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Ogino says the spike is due to an unhealthy stew of risk factors that are probably working together, some of which are known and others that need to be investigated.

He notes that many of these risks have established links to cancer like obesity, inactivity, diabetes, alcohol, smoking, environmental pollution and Western diets high in red meat and added sugars, not to mention shift work and lack of sleep.

"And there are many unknown risk factors as well, like a pollutant or like food additives. Nobody knows," he said.

The Philadelphia Phillies organization is mourning the loss of a young prospect. Minor-league pitcher Corey Phelan has died from cancer at the age of 20, the Phillies announced.

In April of this year, Phelan was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In the team's announcement, Phillies Director of Player Development Preston Mattingly spoke glowingly about his experience with Phelan.

BBC newsreader George Alagiah on hiatus to receive treatment after cancer ‘spreads further’

BBC newsreader George Alagiah has stepped away from presenting News At Six after scans showed his cancer has spread further.

The 66-year-old newsreader was first diagnosed with the disease in 2014 and then again in 2017.

Alagiah said of the new diagnosis: “A recent scan showed that my cancer has spread further so it’s back to some tough stuff.

“I’m missing my colleagues. Working in the newsroom has been such an important part of keeping energised and motivated.

“I look forward to being back in that studio as soon as I can.”

The news was confirmed by his agent Mary Greenham.

Sri Lanka-born Alagiah underwent 17 rounds of chemotherapy to treat his advanced bowel cancer in 2014.

He returned to presenting in 2015 after making progress against the disease, and said he was a “richer person” for it.

His cancer returned in December 2017 and he underwent further treatment before again returning to work.

In 2020, he tested positive for coronavirus after deciding to stop appearing in the studio during the outbreak following advice from doctors and colleagues.

WACO, Texas (KWTX) - Beloved KWTX weatherman Rusty Garrett, 67, who retired in 2019 after 30 years at Channel 10, but continues to anchor weekend mornings, has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer, and in true “Rusty style,” he’s finding a way to find sunshine in the rain.

“Sure, we all deal with struggles, and we all have things in life that we have to deal with, spiritually, physically, economically, financially, but if you just take a moment to stop and think about all the blessings you have - I know, for me, the blessings far outweigh the struggles,” Rusty said.

The veteran meteorologist was diagnosed in July with stage 2 to 3 esophageal cancer, which is cancer that occurs in the esophagus, a long, hollow tube that runs from the throat to the stomach.

Rusty’s first symptoms were digestive issues. “I know for a fact that I had the symptoms fairly early. In fact, six months ago, I started having digestive problems,” Rusty said.

Teddi Mellencamp Reveals She Has Been Diagnosed With Stage 2 Melanoma: ‘This Has Been Such a Wakeup Call’

Teddi Mellencamp opened up about her recent health journey — and revealed she has been diagnosed with stage two melanoma.

“Melanoma awareness update. Despite my anxiety, I listened to the doctors and went in for my 3-month skin check last week since my previous melanoma,” the former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star, 41, wrote via Instagram on Tuesday, October 11, alongside a photo of a scar on her right shoulder. “They said I had another abnormal spot near my last one so they did a biopsy. I got the call this morning: Stage 2 melanoma. Now, next Wednesday I go to an oncologist to have it cut out and come up with a game plan on next steps.”

The reality star shared that the skin cancer likely was caused by “putting baby oil and iodine on my skin to tan” as a teenager in the ‘90s, and never "wearing sunscreen" or "getting my moles checked until I was 40 years old.”

“I so badly wanted to blow this off. 'What could happen in 3 months?' I thought. Apparently a lot,” she wrote before concluding her post with a call to action.

"This has been such a wakeup call for me, and I hope to all of you, to love and protect the skin you’re in,” she wrote.

This isn’t the first time Mellencamp has discussed her experiences with melanoma. The Indiana native revealed in March that former castmate Kyle Richards took her to the doctor after noticing her skin was changing color.

“This is a reminder to please go get your yearly skin checks. I had been avoiding mine bc of my own anxiety for a very long time but when @ kylerichards18 saw my back and it had changed colors again, she immediately took me to the doc who within minutes said it looks like melanoma and did a big removal,” she said via Instagram at the time, adding that she hopes her experience will serve as a reminder “to take action on your own skin.”
