UPDATE: In memory of those who “died suddenly” in Ontario, May 8-May 21, 2023
Teacher Lara Jean Vlach, chiropractor "Ken" Cairns, anesthetist Robin Harwood, social worker Skye Giffin, firefighter Kevin Brian Vandevyvere; & 330 more in Ontario (+ 7 others elsewhere in Canada)
CANADA – SPECIAL WILDFIRE EDITION
“Sudden deaths” in Canada have spiked dramatically in just the last few weeks, making it impossible for our (severely understaffed) research team to track the deluge. Hence this special posting of over 300 obits, from the period May 8-21).
A note from our lead Canada researcher:
As high as it is—higher even than the toll in Italy, although Canada has a much smaller population—the weekly toll that we have been recording in these compilations is much lower than it ought to be, due to the terseness of obituaries from some of Canada’s highly multicultural populations. The death notices from those communities are less detailed than those from the general population.
There is a similar void of information in our northern regions. It is extremely difficult to find death notices of any kind for those communities, whose rate of “sudden deaths” may well be hidden. What all this means, in short, is that the true rate of “sudden deaths” in Canada is probably much higher–perhaps five times higher–than the quite high rate that we’ve recorded here.
A note on suicides:
Suicides by young people are up 22% during the pandemic in Canada and 17 other countries (and it’s why we’re including suicides in our compilations):

Josef Bossart, 72
May 17, 2023
On the evening of Friday, May 5th, 2023, Jo Bossart did what he often did when something was taking too long, and slipped off quietly when he was ready. He had spent the previous 15 months being treated for leukemia, and at the time his death was in Ottawa to receive a stem cell transplant that could have represented a cure to his condition. He studied Chemistry at Carleton University and pursed a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry at the Ohio State University. During his career in the pharmaceutical industry, Jo worked to ensure that effective and ethical treatments made it to market. Gradually transitioning to consulting in the industry he managed to bypass retirement altogether. As an industry analyst, he published reports focusing on Drug Development and Delivery. Given his first opportunity to engage with a community he supported and served on the boards of several local non-profits including Park to Park Trails, HANDS, the West Parry Sound District Museum, Parry Sound Power & Sail Squadron, Sail Parry Sound, and the Chamber of Commerce. An avid photographer, hiker, and snowshoer he spent much of his spare wandering, cycling, and exploring on the trails in the area, sharing what he saw on ParrySights.com. To acknowledge the considerable support Jo received during his illness, the family requests donations to Canadian Blood Services.

Ted moved to Pembroke in the past year but soon realized how happy he was returning to Carleton Place where he was closer to Chris, Carolyn, Kay, Harmony and his many friends. Upon his return he found his way back into radio broadcasting doing Friday nights at Valley Heritage Radio 98.7 FM In Renfrew. Last Friday, Ted had a fatal stroke on the drive back from Renfrew to his home in Carleton Place. Before leaving for home, he replied to a text from a friend who wrote “Thanks for another great Friday evening”. Anybody that met him couldn’t help but feel the contagious positivity he radiated, being constantly upbeat and smiling, often singing at the top of his lungs first thing in the morning and taking any chance to put on a performance in the car too. Everyone that knew him felt his selfless generosity, he was a man who never put himself before others, and would do anything for his friends and family. He lived his life for his family, and had great pride in that; he was a wonderful role model, a great man, and the best husband, son and father he could be.

No cause of death reported.
I literally FORCE myself to read these, as a record upon my soul, my conscienceness, I am recording this as crimes against humanity. But it is not without cost. I am sitting here immobilized, tears streaming down my face, these poor souls, sacrificed on the alter of what, exactly? I mourn them, their precious lives cut short...
Here’s one I haven’t seen here yet.
She was active and healthy...aside from being a vaxx zealot. I know, she chastised my family re masks and the vaxx and covid panic via her teaching. Otherwise I only have wonderful things to say about her. She was lovely! And SUCH an amazing teacher.
I heard the cause of death was a sudden infection after a minor nasal surgery. Total shock.
https://www.legacy.com/ca/obituaries/theglobeandmail/name/elizabeth-hart-obituary?id=51964610
Still haven’t found the obit for a friend’s husband who died within 2 months from cancer just a couple weeks ago.
Also the otherwise healthy and active vaxxed nurse friend of mine who at 50 had a heart attack (blamed on menopause!!) less than a year ago now has cancer. Started in her appendix, spread to her ovaries and bowels. Doesn’t sound good.
She says it was a one in 200 million kinda cancer. Not with this death shot.
I stay quiet and only offer shock and support.
She knows how I feel.
BC is probably undercounted.
