Speaking of abortion, thanks for including that Jagger-Grohl abomination in your collection of outrages. It's not surprising that the owners of two of the most punchable faces in popular music (with Bono rounding out the Top Three with a long list of runners-up) came up with that one.

THE COVID-19 FRAUD and WAR ON HUMANITY

Chomsky is an absolute embarrassment. You have to wonder if he hasn't been controlled opposition from day one.

Expand full comment

The NYT, at least through Chomsky's most productive years, saw him as an incredibly dangerous political force.--esp on foreign policy/militarism. They refused to review any of his political books, no matter how popular and how well reviewed elsewhere. Chomsky has also taken some stands in support of radical feminist issues which only the rarest lefty has dared to take. But, as Mark says, he has invariably dismissed "conspiracy theories" no matter how effectively evidenced.

Expand full comment

Compare Chomsky's comfortable tenure at MIT to the far more brilliant writer Michael Parenti, who was harassed and fired from academia, and is never mentioned in corporate media.

Chomsky was seen as a threat in the 1970s, and ignored. But his rise to a certain fame in the liberal part of corporate media since the beginning of the 1990s may have happened exactly because of his dismissal of "conspiracy theories" . If he had said anything different, he would have been pushed out into obscurity again.

I don't differ with you. But no matter to what extent Chomsky has been assimilated, and for whatever the reasons, his political scholarship/books and his political positions (the god & brave ones I mean) will stand. I'm curious about Parenti's view of covid/the vaccine etc. or is he, like most of the left, passing on these questions. (curiosity, not criticism of Parenti who I strongly admire)

I agree, I will use any person's work on the issues where they are of value, Including Chomsky.

That's just my point. It begs the question if, even back then, he wasn't being used to nudge things in the direction of communism/centralization by undermining the traditional/current order of the time. I remember an interview with David Horowitz where he claimed Jewish resistance against Vietnam was rooted in Communist sympathy, not antiwar sentiment. The point being people can often champion good causes but their principal purpose is to advance a hidden agenda. If you look at radical feminism from the standpoint of Cultural Marxism, then his advocacy in that respect could be seen as seeking to undermine America or nudge it toward communism.

There is nothing as humbling as going to the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu early in the morning.

There is a strange smell in the air, lots of smoke. It's also foggy. It's like being in a dream.

You approach the Bagmati river and then, through the smoke, see a grieving family setting fire to the body of a loved one. The body is cremated as it floats down the river.

That smell you noticed earlier was burning human flesh.

Rhesus macaque monkeys - with their very human-like features - approach you. You feel humbled and unnerved in equal measure.

It doesn't get more real than that.

Agreed. Our natural state (condition) has become biological survival to avoid death at all costs coupled with consumerism to avoid fear by all means. Dismissing discipline, risk, effort, and just the act of being and instead favoring seduction, consumerism, and owning stuff has perverted our societies and selves. The French philosopher (Ariane Bilheran) basing her approach on Hannah Arendt's The Origins of Totalitarianism, says it best (sorry, I can't find a translation). Our lives are theater, and our acquiescence / descent into totalitarianism had started long before Covid.

Intellectuals who often live in cities removed from country living (and the normal / regular observation of death among animals, crops, etc.) are the cowards who bring to the rest of us those brilliant ideas that serve them best and annihilate all. No wonder we are full of despair.

He's always been an anti-"conspiracist," scoffing at the idea that JFK/Dallas, MLK's murder, Bush/Cheney's election thefts and 9/11 were not as advertised. Thus he's always led the left AWAY from the most consequential state crimes since World War II, while going on and on about Cambodia, East Timor, El Salvador, etc.—certainly important stories, too; and yet they've mattered ONLY to the left, whereas those other, vastly graver crimes might actually have sparked mass anger and revolt, if Chomsky didn't help dismiss them.

So his odious position on this "vaccination" drive is not all that surprising, since he can't, or won't, imagine that the COVID furore was a mammoth psy-op, just as he doesn't think JFK's murder matters (as he's said, in so many words).

Expand full comment

Mark you solve many mysteries, this one included. Why Chomsky did this is another matter. What masters did he serve other than the ideological?

Expand full comment

Good question. He could be an asset, or he could just be inflexibly committed to his structural view of politics—i.e, that the System works a certain way, and those who are part of it just do what they're supposed to do as part of it. In other words, there are no conspiracies. Case closed.

It's hard to say. Maybe it's both?

Expand full comment

He seems too intelligent to believe this, and yet his stated position says otherwise. It’s so confusing especially given his vast writings on US hegemony and its destructive foreign policy that tears countries apart from the inside out.

His blindness on the machinations of power within America’s own borders is quite astounding.

Expand full comment

I think he, and a certain segment of the “academic left”, have a devotion to “structural analysis” vs “conspiracy analysis” and are therefore incapable of thinking dialectically, that is, perceiving that they are both true. Michael Parenti does a compelling analysis along these lines in one of his talks years ago.

In CA this happening is as likely as nominating an honest governor or having meaningful school choice. Today I was hoping to attend a Yoga class. Though their website stated it was a place for compassion and non-judgment, on the top, the header proudly stated it was a 'vax only' studio and a verified card needed to be presented. I told a friend who was so hopeful to join a swanky new health club in the area. She checked their website and they too proudly had the same requirement. She was inconsolable. It can be very lonely in a deep blue area where vilification of the unvaxxed is this favorite sport of the elites. So I hope the world wakes up but alas I think it won't happen in California until our cities look like a scene in Terminator II of what is to come. Actually in some parts our cities do like that already and it hasn't made a difference. So actually I have no hope.

I have been writing our council person for two years about a link between the lockdowns, officials violating mandates, lawlessness of streets and people driving crazy. We are animals and signal to each other whether we’re conscious or not. Even little old ladies blow through stop signs in our area. I no longer trust people won’t blow through red lights. I fear for our cities here because people know something is wrong, won’t admit what it is so it comes out in other ways like poison escaping through skin.

Wow, same is happening here in upstate/western NY. The driving has gotten very aggressive. Also people have gotten very unfriendly. It borders on violence and is very worrisome. Some people blame the side effects of the shots but I think it's the stress of 2 1/2 years of fear-mongering and social isolation.

Even those of us who didn't take the shot are suffering from the side effects of this craziness.

Related to this, what I've noticed in my area is an end to weekly listings, the end to many small organizations, an end to investigative reporting (internet/covid combo), and an end to many social circles. And yup, the driving has gotten more aggressive, impatient, rude, and dangerous.

Same here in MI… they’ve actually put a 30 sec pause on red lights so all sides are red. I try to drive as little as possible and slower than ever. And I have driven long distances for 13yrs for work. There’s so many construction zones on high MPH freeways with little work that I wonder if they set them up in purpose.

Something weird is happening with the traffic lights here in WNY too. Quite often they are not working or just blinking red. In the past (pre-Covid/old normal) city workers would be on the site to repair the traffic lights. But now it seems that traffic lights not working is a normal thing. They're also putting up speed bumps and 15-20 mph speed limits. It's frustrating drivers even more who then start tailgating, making it even more dangerous. I suppose this is the way the PTB are discouraging us from traveling. Doesn't bode well.

I left California for Texas. But I would probably try going there anyway and DARING them to not let me in.

Expand full comment

Yes, some people here in NY have used fake V ID cards or know someone at the door who'll let 'em in just 'cause they're friends. Also sometimes places have rules that they post on the door but they do that just to appease the government. When masks were mandated, a friend of mine and I went out maskless and were surprised when no one bothered us--big sign on the front door saying "masks required" but we walked in maskless and no one said a word...

Expand full comment

Even in Texas I would test the mask signs all the time. Got a variety of reactions.

One store the guy asked me to put on a mask. When I said they don't work he responded: "I understand, but the people who sign my paycheck insist that I ask."

Respect.

Another store, it was just me and the cashier. She said mask. I said "It's just you and me here." She said "Corporate watches on the camera. If I take it off I'm in trouble."

Respect again.

But then there's the dunderheads who just go mask and don't care what you see.

Then there's the hypochondriacs. They're the worst.

But at least now they generally stopped enforcing it. Any place that does, I'd never go back there.

I used to like that store, but will never buy anything there again.

As the vaxxed are more likely to get Covid, I feel the best way to stay safe is to go indoors where no vax card is required.

I felt horrible for my friend. She cried all day. For her the gym was a social place for her. I am used to phonies in LA.
