In his book Anatomy of an Epidemic, Robert Whitaker pointed out how while people diagnosed with schizophrenia used to live as long as everybody else, after the new remedies were brought out in the seventies and eighties average life expectancy dropped to 53. They suffered many health conditions they never had before and most people did not. And they could no longer hope to fully recover as a sizeable number had in the past.
