Yes, but why no braking? You are already passing someone using oncoming traffic lane. A (car in the turn lane??) Making a left turn. Cop car sees this and swerves into the sidewalk. But no brakes? And why not try to swerve back into regular traffic.

The story is light on details, maybe an FAA report can gather more facts. They blamed the student for too steep an ascent, but the flight instructor would have/should have immediately corrected the error. Plus, from the data available, this allegedly steep ascent wouldn't have stalled the plane (I earned my skydiving license flying Cessna 172s, with much steeper ascents than what they're describing). Read the other comments, it's not adding up for others either:
I have a great deal of experience with NYC driving--and Bronx driving, and nothing strikes me here, except for one crucial thing: once that police van gets clipped by the left turning car, it would have jerked toward the left turn, and never would have continued in such a straight (slightly angled) manner and right toward what was obviously the sidewalk. I mean the driver has an open road in front of him and selects the sidewalk. No way.
I cannot say what happened, but even an inexperienced driver wouldn't take that angle after being clipped on the right side. I mean the turning car had every right to that turn and was making it into the street at the cop's left. This meant that all the police driver had to do was follow that same intended path after jerking his own vehicle to the left. The cop driver would do this instinctively. What the police did after is not really the issue... driving into a busy corner sidewalk is.

i was driving behind a car on the highway that veered off the road, through a guardrail, into a gully. i looked it up in the news - they got all the details wrong. they said the driver died upon impact (he didn't, i ran down the gully and rendered aid - he was alive though incoherent). they got the vehicle type wrong. then i realized...there were TWO crashes on the SAME highway on the SAME day, just a few miles down the road. in both cases the drivers simply lost consciousness and went through guardrails.

According to a witness at the scene on the NBC 4 report, the cop car was trying to take a left turn when a Honda slammed into it, forcing the cop car onto the sidewalk. I will try and find a video.When I cut and pasted the first video on your list I was taken to the NBC 4 report.
Honestly, after taking another look at the video, it appears that the cop car was attempting to overtake the Honda on the Honda's left (both going in the same direction). But the Honda was actually looking to make a left turn and did not notice the cop car (and the cop car failed to also be cautious before overtaking). Cop car then sees that he cannot overtake Honda without hitting it, and swerves out of the way.
I agree that the cop should have used brakes to lessen the impact
